The 41st Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Award Nominations were announced Wednesday, May 9th at noon on the internet. The EMMY® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

This year 621 English and 114 Spanish entries were received in 59 categories. A minimum of five peer judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 on Content, Creativity and Execution. (Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only).

“Gila River and Mama: The Ruth Mix Story” documents the experience of 15 year old Ruth Mix who, with her mother Frida Mix, volunteered as a Caucasian Nurse’s Aid at Butte Camp Hospital at Gila River Japanese Internment Camp in Arizona. History is brought to life through interviews and reenactments, and the emotional tale of Ruth’s time at the camp is an important perspective on these events as witnessed by a young caucasian woman.

Charles Class attended a day long symposium titled ‘Cast in Bronze,’ Saturday October 22, 2011. The event was held at the Japanese Community Cultural Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) 1840 Sutter (near Webster Street) in San Francisco.

The topic was about the accurate use of terminology as it relates to the wartime incarceration of Japanese and Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II.

An amazing array of noted history-makers and experts on the World War II incarceration spoke at “Cast In Bronze – Terminology and Memory of the Japanese American WWII Incarceration Experience”.

Forum organized by the Tule Lake Committee, Japanese American National Library, and JCCCNC.
